OpenHIT

OpenHIT transforms the collection and usability of critical public health data.

OpenHIT is a next-generation application for managing the collection and use of consumer health records by public health agencies at the national, state, and local levels. Initially, OpenHIT will capture and manage immunization records nationally. OpenHIT replaces a complex legacy application that public health agencies have been using since the early 1990s. OpenHIT has been built from the ground up using advanced cloud, DevSecOps, and data management technologies and supports the advanced HL7 FHIR and HL7 V2 healthcare data standards. Using OpenHIT, public health agencies can contribute to a national immunization database for multiple conditions and improve population health across the US.

For public health agencies and healthcare systems, OpenHIT functions as an enterprise-class system of record for immunization data. Key functionality includes:

  • Centralized Data Repository – acts as a robust centralized database, storing immunization records for individuals – ensuring healthcare systems and public health agencies have real-time access to accurate and up-to-date information, enhancing patient care.
  • Data Interoperability – Fully supports HL7, the US standard for storing consumer healthcare data – ensuring seamless connectivity and data exchange between diverse healthcare systems, providers, and public health agencies.
  • Records Management – Enables healthcare providers to enter, update, and retrieve immunization records.
  • Notifications – Send automated notifications and reminders to patients or guardians about upcoming or overdue immunizations – promoting timely vaccinations and improving public health outcomes.
  • Reporting and Analytics – Provides powerful reporting tools to gain insights into vaccination coverage rates, compliance reports, and other vital public health metrics.
  • Decision Support – Includes clinical decision support tools to help healthcare providers determine the appropriate vaccinations for patients based on age, medical history, and other factors based on defined immunization guidelines.
  • Security and Privacy – embeds security features, including end-to-end encryption, access controls, user roles, and HIPAA compliance, to protect sensitive patient information.
  • 3rd Party Integration – Seamlessly integrates with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, school health systems, and other healthcare databases – provide a comprehensive view of a patient’s health records.
  • Vaccine Ordering – Integrates with the CDC’s vaccine ordering and inventory management system to streamlines vaccine procurement and inventory management – ensuring that providers can meet public health demands.

LLM Foundation

Large language models (LLMs) have taken the tech world by storm, and everyone is rushing to adapt them for their use cases. These adaptations can be in the form of directly using vanilla models, fine-tuning (using algorithms such as PEFT-LoRA), and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).

The Double-Edged Sword of Interoperability in Development

In the fast-paced realm of software development, the concept of interoperability serves as both a beacon of progress and a cautionary tale. This principle, which advocates for disparate systems and applications to work seamlessly together, holds the promise of a more integrated and efficient technological ecosystem. However, as with any significant shift in paradigms, it brings with it a set of challenges and concerns, particularly regarding the pace of innovation and the landscape of consumer choices.
